A press release from COMMON
July 24, 2007 - IBM previewed today the new release of its flagship integrated operating system, i5/OS, expected in 2008. This new version is expected to feature significant new capabilities in security, Web services and virtualization. IBM also announced the first System i that will feature the fastest microprocessor ever built, POWER6. These announcements demonstrate IBM’s commitment to advancing the integration and ease of use of i5/OS and delivering leading POWER systems.
COMMON members’ collective leadership voice to IBM through the COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) was instrumental in helping IBM prioritize their development investments and packaging concepts. This product release, along with previous product releases, was heavily influenced by the requirements process between IBM and COMMON and other user groups within the System i community.
”The members of the System i user groups were the inspiration for many of the product features and enhancements we announced today,” said Mark Shearer, General Manager, IBM System i. “ This is a community that knows the unique value that the System i platform provides to clients and they help IBM determine how it needs to adjust and improve to support changing technology needs.”
”COMMON has always taken a leadership position in delivering System i product requirements to IBM and continues to do so as the collective voice of its members,” said Randy Dufault, COMMON President. “ This presentation of our members’ needs to IBM has influenced the development and release of new System i solutions over the years that benefit the entire System i community, including the delivery of PHP and IP telephony to System i.”
